Mona was the second youngest in a family of seven children. When she was six her parents divorced and her father was awarded full custody of the children. He soon remarried and my grandmother thereafter had a rather bleak childhood. The children were raised by their step-mother who went on to have seven children of her own. Older sister Florence would take the younger children to visit their mother in secret as they were forbidden by their father from seeing her. As soon as she was old enough Mona left home.
She met Peter Glennan, her husband to be when working as a waitress in a restaurant. She thought he was wonderful and had no hesitation in changing her religion to Catholic so that she could marry him.
Peter and Mona were married on 11 December 1915 in Balmain, NSW. Peter was a Fitter and Turner and Mona was a Pantry Maid.
In the early years of their marriage Peter and Mona moved house quite a lot with each child born in a different location. Peter was a good husband for the first few years but when they were living in Emerald, Queensland he began to drink which led to him becoming a violent alcoholic. His children always referred to him as Old Pete never Dad or Father. When the family was back living in Balmain he worked for the ship building company, Poole & Steel.
Peter was a very keen golfer and golf instructor and with the help of my grandmother Mona and the older children, laid out a golf course at North Strathfield. During their married years my grandmother suffered mental and physical abuse with Peter breaking her arm and knocking out some of her teeth during his drunken violent outbursts. He finally deserted his family in 1933 when their youngest daughter Coral, or Cooch as the family called her, was only one week old. He claimed he was not the father, but funnily enough she grew to be the most like him. He went to live with a woman from the Arnotts biscuit family to whom he taught golf. My grandmother then took on the task of raising her six children by herself. It was during the 1930's Great Depression and there was no government welfare. Times were very tough and jobs were scarce so my grandmother cleaned houses and took in washing to make ends meet. The older children who were able to work gave all their wages to their mother to help keep a roof over their heads. When Old Pete's new relationship ended he attempted to reconcile the marriage but my grandmother refused to take him back.
Mona began divorce proceedings almost 20 years after being separated and they were divorced on 9 September 1954. My grandmother was a lovely Nana who was dearly loved by all her grandchildren. I loved her so much and looked forward to her visits. She would come on the bus and we were allowed to leave school and come home for lunch. She always brought us a treat of some kind but I loved it when I got a packet of Rollo chocolates. On the occasions when she came to babysit us at night she allowed us to stay up late watching TV shows like Bonanza. Her favourite treats were bottled oysters and ginger chocolates.
In 1957 Peter was living in North Sydney, NSW. He made his Last Will and Testament on 23 September 1957.
Old Pete died, aged 68, of cerebral thrombosis, lasting one month on 28 October 1957 in St Leonards, NSW. He was buried on 30 October 1957 at Gore Hill Cemetery, St Leonards, NSW in the same plot as his sister, Margaret Ignatius Glennan and next to his parents Lawrence and Mary Jane Glennan.
