John GLENNAN and Catherine HACKETT
John GLENNAN (c.1807-1883), son of Lawrence and Honor GLENNAN, was born about 1807 at The Curragh in Kildare, Ireland. The Curragh is an area of some 75 square miles of ancient Crown Land on the downs of County Kildare and it is said to have belonged at one stage to Saint Brigid who made it into a common. For some centuries it has been the principal horse racing ground in Ireland. More precisely, John's family probably came from a locality known as "Knocknagalla". John was a Farmer.
Catherine HACKETT (c.1807-1854), daughter of Michael and Mary HACKETT, was born about 1807 in County Kildare, Ireland.
John and Catherine were married, by the rites of the Roman Catholic Church on 28 January 1834 in Navanstown, Kildare, Co. Kildare, Ireland.
John and Catherine, and their children left Ireland and travelled to Dundee, Scotland where on 16 September 1841 they boarded the ship "Anne Milne" bound for Australia. See Shipping Record. Four months later on 17 January 1842 they arrived in Sydney. John, aged 35, was a Farm Servant and Catherine, aged 35, a Dairy Woman and both could read and write. Years later when John made his Will he was unable to sign his name, so I think they exaggerated their ability to read and write. They travelled out with another Glennan family from Kildare, Anthony (son of Michael & Ann Glennon) & Mary Glennon nee Cooiney, and their six children. Thomas Cleary from Knocknagalla provided a certificate of good character for John and a surgeon issued both John and Catherine with a certificate of good health proclaiming them both "of good health and likely to be useful". The arrival of the "Anne Milne" was reported in The Sydney Herald, 18 January, 1842, page 2.
John Glennan featured in an article in The Manaro Mercury and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser, 7 August 1872, page 2, entitled "Small Debts Court - John Harris v. John Glennan". It involved the building of a chimney at John's house.
Catherine died aged 50, on 27 October 1854 in Cooma, however no official record can be found.
John died aged 78, of natural causes and inflammation of the stomach, lasting 4 days on 26 April 1883 at Cooma Creek, NSW. The informant was his son-in-law, Phillip Kelly of Cooma Creek. Catherine and John are buried next to each other in the Old Christ Church Cemetery on the Myalla Road about 2 km from Cooma.
On 12 January 1878, three months before he died, John made his Last Will and Testament at Cooma. He left his land to two of his children, Joseph received 64 acres and Mary Ann Kelly received 247 acres plus his bullock dray and tackling. His sheep and cattle were divided equally between his children, Lawrence, Mary Ann, Bridget and Rose. His estate was valued at £598.
